Leftover Halloween Costume Stock: What to Clear, What to Carry, What to Write Off

The week after Halloween decides whether the season's margin survives. Sort leftover stock by what will still sell next October, not by what is left on the shelf.

On 1 November the category stops selling. Not slows down — stops. Everything a retailer decides in that first week happens against a clock that has already run out, which is why the leftover decision deserves a rule set instead of a mood.

The first week sets the recovery rate

Clearance is not one decision, it is a sequence, and each step costs more than the one before it.

  • Your own list first. Customers who bought this year are the cheapest audience to reach and the least price-sensitive.
  • Then the floor, bundled with something that still has a use, because a lone costume at 40% off reads as dead stock.
  • Then jobbers and liquidation, which recover a fraction and take the choice away from you.
  • Donation last, and take the receipt — it is worth more than the freight on unsellable units.

Sort by what carries, not by what is left

The useful question is not "what did not sell" but "what will still sell next October". Those are different lists, and mixing them is how a stockroom fills up with things nobody wants twice.

  • Silhouettes carry. Witch gowns, pirate coats, ninja sets, knight tunics, ghost robes and capes sell every year because the reference never expires. A gothic witch gown is the same product in 2027 as it is now.
  • Trend prints do not. Any design whose appeal rests on this season's styling, colour story or a character-adjacent look should leave the building now.
  • Condition decides more than style. A returned unit missing a belt or a hat is not carryover stock, whatever the silhouette.

Carry it properly or do not carry it

Storing twelve months is a decision with its own failure modes, and most of them are moisture and pressure.

  • Dry, dark, off the floor. Coated surfaces and foil prints mark where they are stacked under weight.
  • Sealed with desiccant, and open the cartons once mid-year rather than discovering the problem in September.
  • Masks, wigs and props separately, since they are the parts that deform, shed or smell.
  • Write the count on the carton — style, size, quantity — or you will re-buy what you already own.

Carry over what has a second buyer

Some leftovers do not need to wait a year. Family and Santa sets move into a Christmas programme, which is why a Santa family set is a different conversation from a costume at 50% off. Kids' classics such as the stealth ninja set also hold for party, school and dress-up demand outside October.

What is left after those two moves is a demand signal, and it is worth writing down. A carton of unsold trend prints is telling you the buy was too fashion-led; an empty classic shelf in week three is telling you the opposite. Next season's order should reflect both.

Sorting is a morning's work. Carrying the wrong things costs a year of storage and a shelf that cannot take the styles that would have sold.
